How to access a banned page? for newbies

Ok lets begin by explaining how does the system works. Your internet provides you an IP. IP is a combination of numbers which is something like your telephone number. The only difference is IP has 12 digits and there are dots after each 3 digits. (e.g. 212.225.80.12)

So, your computer gets an IP from your Internet Provider at each time you connect internet.

Think about the banned webpage you want to connect (lets assume YouTube) is on a computer which owns an IP. In these terms, when the goverment wants to ban YouTube, think like they cut the cable between your computer and YouTube. So what you have to do in this moment is to connect another computer then connect YouTube.

To do this, we use DNS’. Consider DNS as the “other computer”. The DNS you want to use to connect YouTube has to be free and public first of all. So you’ll have find a DNS IP to connect it.

The page that I use is ; tech-faq.

Take two IP numbers from there. We’ll use the first one as primary IP the other IP will the the alternative.

Lets assume  them as;

  • 212.216.112.112
  • 212.216.172.62

Now you need a shortcut to connect you to a DNS. I use NetSetMan (you can download it by clicking on it) to perform this job.

After you install the executable file, when you run the program, you see a window with “SET”s on it.  So just select a SET randomly (doesn’t matter which one).

You’ll see a REFRESH button there and on the left of it, there’s a drop-down menu.  Just click on it and then select which connection you are on. This is important because if you select the wrong connection, the settings will be applied into a wrong connection. So it will not apply to your connection. If you are on a wired connection; choose Local Area Network, if on wireless connection; choose Wireless Network Connection.

If it is done, make the DNS Server checked. This will open up two selections for you.

  • Obtain a DNS server automatically.
  • Use the following DNS server addresses.

Choose the second option. This will open up two ready-to-enter two IP (Preferred and Alternate) forms. These forms already have the dots so you don’t need to enter them. Just enter the numbers.

And then just press “ACTIVATE” button on the right. It will do the trick by itself. Then just click OK and close the NetSetMan.

Restart your browser. And you’re done.

Voila.

You can connect anywhere you want.

PS: If you still cannot connect to the YouTube, there might be two  problems. The most obvious problem is; the DNS IPs you’ve chosen may be banned too. The other problem is choosing the wrong connection.

Good luck with that.
